Many families in Haiti survive by eating mud cookies so they do not die of starvation. As per the testimony of Charlene Dumas, a 16 year old single mother, who shares a two room house with her son Wilson, five brothers and their unemployed parents, they eat mud biscuits mixed with salt and margarine, which have become a regular source of livelihood for the impoverished population of Haiti.
"When my mother does not cook anything, I have to eat them three times a day" says Charlene.
Although she likes the salty and fatty taste of the biscuits, Charlene says that they also cause stomach pains. "When I breastfeed, my baby sometimes also has cramps."
